What to expect at my painting workshops (even if you haven’t done art since school!)
You don’t need to call yourself an artist to enjoy painting
In fact, some of the most joyful, expressive artworks I’ve seen have come from people who walked into my workshop saying, “I’m not artsy” or “I haven’t painted since high school.”
That’s where the palette knife comes in. It’s a forgiving, playful tool that encourages you to stop overthinking and just make marks.
I often say:
“If you can butter toast, I can show you how to paint with a palette knife.”
And I mean it.
It’s more than just a painting class
My workshops aren’t about technical perfection or mastering perspective. They’re about giving yourself two whole hours to unwind, let go of your day, and find your creative flow. There’s something deeply therapeutic about using a palette knife—the way the paint glides and scrapes, the boldness of the marks, the permission to be loose and spontaneous.
Even the most hesitant attendees settle into the process and surprise themselves. I’ve seen people go from unsure dabs of paint to bold, expressive strokes—completely absorbed, smiling to themselves, lost in the moment.
And the best part? They walk away not just with a finished artwork but with a real sense of delight in what they’ve created.
What to expect on the day:
You’ll arrive at Urban Co-Lab in Kedron—a relaxed, welcoming space in Brisbane—and be greeted with a warm smile and all the materials you’ll need. Just bring yourself (and maybe a friend), and we’ll take care of the rest.
We all paint (yes, I paint too) on beautiful thick paper using professional-quality impasto paints. I guide you step-by-step through creating a finished artwork—whether it’s a vibrant beachscape, a fresh citrus still life, or native blooms bursting with colour.
You don’t need:
Any prior painting experience
Any special drawing skills
Any art materials (I’ve got it all covered)
You do need:
A little curiosity
A willingness to play and let go (seriously, if you can butter toast, you can paint with a palette knife – I am there to show, encourage and help you along the way!)
Two hours just for you
So many people leave feeling lighter, more relaxed, and creatively recharged. It’s not just about what you make—it’s about how it makes you feel.
